While studying Architecture at Tulane University, I participated in a program called UrbanBUILD where the first semester was spent designing two bedroom home, and the twelve students involved spent the second semester building the home on an empty lot from the foundation up. The design is a single level infill house with a central living and dining space situated between two courtyards which allow for sunlight and garden views in every room, as well as celebrate the collection of rainwater through sloped roofing. The UrbanBUILD program gave me the most hands on and complete understanding of construction, more so than any class could have offered. Below are some images of the construction progress as well as final photographs of the house, which is sold at a highly discounted rate in a low income area and the profit is used for the program to continue to the following year.
